Billing for your hardware and paint shop in Puducherry

Cement by the bag, sand by the load, pipe by the foot and the contractor's account, all on one phone.

Tools for a yard with a counter, a godown and a contractor's running account

  • Godown stock

Tins tinted for a customer wait in the back with a count of their own, apart from the plain tins on the shelf, so a mixed tin is not mistaken for a plain one.

  • Credit book (khata)

A page for the shopkeeper in the trading town who buys hinges, screws and paint on a running account, each pick-up a dated line, read together on the day he settles.

  • Bills on your phone

A bill for a tinted tin with its shade and size in the name, paid on the day it is mixed or left on the buyer's page, sent to his WhatsApp.

Why a Puducherry hardware yard tints paint to order, cuts pipe to length and waits for trucks

  1. A tin tinted to a customer's shade that nobody else will buy

The owner pays and the painter collects. A tin is tinted to the shade the owner chose, then the painter changes his mind halfway and asks for a second tin. The notebook says 'paint' and a figure, not which shade, which size or who ordered it. When the owner says he never chose the new shade, the first tin is already on the wall and the second is a tin nobody else will buy.

  2. Keys cut at the counter, a dozen small jobs before noon

Key cutting is a small service done at the counter all day: one key, two keys, a key for a padlock. The cutting machine wears with every key, and nobody counts how many it has cut. When the blade is blunt the copy fails, and the customer comes back with a key that does not turn. A customer who has waited for the copy sees the shop owner look at the machine and not at him.

  3. The load that is promised for Monday and comes on Thursday

Sand, gravel and jelly come on trucks from outside the territory, so the day they arrive is set by a rule or a road that you do not control. In the meantime you quote from what is in the yard and what you hope will arrive. When the load comes late, three customers have been told three dates. Each late load is a promise broken to someone, and the yard has no record of whom.

Handicraft units in Yanam and industry at Polagam: who builds and mends around the yard

A hardware yard sells to the people who build and mend things around it, and the regions of Puducherry have their own makers.

  • Coir making and handicrafts are the small and medium industries of Yanam.
  • Polagam is the area set aside as Karaikal's industrial hub, alongside several small cottage industries.

From the tinted tin to the pipe offcut and the yard count before the next load

  • The painter's daily account, settled on a named day

A painter buys a brush, a roller, a litre of thinner and a kilo of putty almost every day. Give him a running account of his own, each morning's pick-up a bill on it, and he settles on a named day. His page is kept apart from the trading-town shopkeepers' pages, so his small lines are not lost among theirs.

  • The mixed tin paid in part on the day it is mixed

A mixed tin cannot go back on the shelf, so ask for a part payment on the day it is mixed. Bill the part on a page in the customer's name, and make the second bill under the same name when he collects the tin. If he changes his mind, the page shows what he has already paid.

  • A customer is told Monday only when Monday's load is on the road

The yard names a day for the jelly or the gravel only from the order sheet. A customer who asks gets the date the order was written, and, once the lorry is noted as arrived, the day it came. Nobody is told Thursday because the yard hoped for Thursday.

Questions a Puducherry hardware and paint shop asks about tinted tins, pipe offcuts and weekly masons

A mason is not sure which day the bags of cement went. Can the Friday list settle it?

Yes. Each day's bags of cement and sand are on a dated line, so the Friday list reads Monday's bags, Tuesday's bags and so on. The mason checks it line by line, and the doubt is about one day and not about the whole week.

A contractor in Mahe wants to know if I have a size of pipe before he makes the journey. Can I send him the shop?

Yes. The shop's own website lists what you sell and is ready to share on WhatsApp. He reads it on his phone before he drives.

A painter wants his brushes and putty on his own page, not on the contractor's. Can he have one?

Yes. Open a page in the painter's name and bill his small items under it. The contractor's sites keep their own pages, and the two are never mixed.

More questions every shop asks

A truck ban that spared Puducherry and a town that trades

In July 2026 Tamil Nadu banned trucks carrying gravel, stones, M-sand and metal jelly out of the state for three months, exempting the Union Territory of Puducherry. For a Puducherry yard that exemption means loads can still come while yards elsewhere run short, and a yard that notes each arrival can see how much of that advantage is in its own heap.

Mahe is described as one of Puducherry's growing trade and commerce centres, with small, cottage and medium industries. A hardware shop in a trading town sells to shopkeepers and small units as well as to builders, and some of them buy on a running account.
