Tools for a counter of loose goods, sachets and a family's monthly basket
Online orders
A family in a village above the town sends its monthly list from your online shop page, and the sugar and oil are counted out before it walks down.
Daily reports
The weeks the road was shut, with strips sold whole beside loose sachets, so the next closure is planned from what went.
Low stock warnings
A warning on the sachet strips, set higher in the weeks the road may close, so the strip on the nail is never the last one.
A highway shut for a month, a strip of ten sachets, and two families with one surname in one lane
A month with the highway shut
The sugar sack at the back of a Sikkim grocery is only as long as the road. After the landslide of 7 July 2026 the highway to West Bengal stayed shut for over a month, and in August it opened only in part. A grocery that orders its rice, oil and sugar when the shelf starts to look thin has nothing to fall back on. The families still come every day, and you tell them what you have, not what they asked for.
A strip of ten sachets, sold as ten and as one
Shampoo, tea, coffee and salt come in sachets, joined in strips of ten. A child buys one sachet for a coin, a family buys a whole strip. The strip hangs on a nail, the loose ones sit in a jar, and the same product has two counts that nobody keeps apart. When the strips run out, the jar is half empty and nobody knows why. A tear in the strip makes ten singles, and you cannot say how many of the ten were sold before the nail was empty.
Two families, one surname, one lane
In a small lane two families can share a surname, and both take goods on udhaar. When one of them says he has paid, you cannot tell which of the two the line belongs to, and neither wants to be the one who was wrong. In a lane of a few houses the whole lane hears of it by evening, and it costs more in goodwill than in rupees.

Strip and sachet in one count, each family's page named by its lane, and the shut road read afterwards
The strip and the sachet counted as one stock
Make the strip an item and the single sachet an item, and open a strip into singles when you tear it. The count of strips and of loose sachets always adds up to what you bought, and the jar and the nail agree. The same method works for matchboxes, incense and anything else that comes joined and goes out apart.
Two families of one surname, two pages named by their lane
Two families of one surname live in one lane, and both take goods on udhaar. Put the lane or the house in each page's name, and when one family says it has paid, the payment goes against its own page. You can send either family its page on WhatsApp, and the other never sees it.
The goods that went first in the shut weeks go on the first truck
When the highway reopens only in part, the first truck cannot carry everything. Open the shut weeks item by item and order in the order the goods ran out, so the oil that was gone soonest goes on the first truck and the rice that lasted longer goes on the next.

North Sikkim, farm country where a village grocery lives on its families
A village grocery depends on the fields around it, and a good harvest shows at the counter before it shows anywhere else.

Questions Sikkim grocery stores ask
The strip hangs on the nail and the loose sachets sit in a jar. How do I record a torn strip?
Take one strip off the strip count and put ten into the jar's count. The nail and the jar then add up to what you bought, and a jar that runs low tells you the loose ones sold faster.
The army camp's kitchen takes the same rice and oil every week, and its clerk wants to read the bill. What do I give him?
Bill the same lines each week, rice in kilos and oil in litres, to the camp's page with the date. At the month's end send the clerk the page on WhatsApp, and he reads four weeks of the same lines and the total.
Visitors take biscuits and bottled water and the lane takes rice and oil. Can I see the two apart?
Open a busy day of visitors and a plain weekday side by side in the daily report. The packets that rise on the first are the visitors', and the ones that stay level are the lane's. The gap between the two days is the visitors' own share of the shelf.
In the lane I know the mothers by their children's names, not their own. How do I name the page?
Call her the way the lane calls her: the mother of the child who comes. Type the child's name followed by mother, with the lane, as the page's name. The child says his own name at the counter, and the page is found.
