Plant towns, a mine and a wholesale market: where Jharkhand's building trade buys

Hardware sells to different builders in different parts of Jharkhand, and the owner learns what is being built from the boys who come for goods. A plant town and a village crossing want very different things from the same shelf.

  • Tata Steel's Noamundi mine in West Singhbhum is the area's largest employer, with about 1,500 on its rolls, and has drawn equipment and logistics firms.
  • Chas, the suburb of Bokaro Steel City, is notable for a large wholesale market.
  • Ranchi, the state capital, is an important centre of trade and commerce in Jharkhand; nearby forests supply furniture, match box and paper industries.

A job that waits billed in parts, a gang's gear as one set and the godown count that starts at the lorry

  1. The advance and the bags sit on one page, so a wait for sand starts no argument

Note the contractor's advance on his page the day he pays it. Each time bags leave your floor for his shed, bill them under his name. His page then reads money in on one side and bags out on the other. When the pour is held up for weeks, you and he can read what he paid and what he has taken so far, and nobody has to remember.

  2. A gang's gear is one set and one bill to the gang boss

Make the set of helmet, gloves and boots an item with its own rate, and keep the parts as separate items for single buyers. The gang boss gets one bill on WhatsApp for the set times the number of workers, and the counts of each part go down together.

  3. The works' paper and the boy's count are read against each other while the lorry is still at the gate

The cement works sends a paper with a number on it. The boy counts aloud, and the bags are keyed into the godown's stock as they are carried in. Read the stock figure against the paper before the driver leaves. A few bags missing are argued about that noon, and not found weeks later when the shelf is short.

What the phone keeps beside the cement bags, the helmets and the paint tins

  • Bills on your phone

Each man's helmet, gloves and boots go on one bill in the sizes the gang boss named, and the same bill reaches him on WhatsApp.

  • Orders to suppliers

An order for the boots and helmets that the gangs take in a month, written from the sizes that sold, with a note of what arrived.

  • Your own online shop

A website for the shop, with helmet sizes, boots and paint tins at their rates, shared on WhatsApp so a gang boss far from town reads the sizes first.

A contractor's advance that sits in the shop, a gang boss who buys for ten workers and a lorry whose count is the driver's word

  • A contractor's advance sits in the shop while his job waits for sand

A contractor pays in advance for cement and rods, and the goods stand in your shop or his shed because the pour cannot start without sand. His money is in your drawer, his bags are on your floor, and neither is written against the other.

  • A gang boss from the plant buys the gear for his whole gang at once

Near a plant or a mine, the man who leads a gang of workers comes in and takes helmets, gloves, boots and rope for all of them. The sizes differ, the quantity is large, and the shop writes it on one slip that has to be turned into a bill and a stock count after he has gone.

  • A lorry of cement arrives at noon, and the count is the driver's word

The cement comes on a lorry with a driver in a hurry, and the bags are carried into the godown while a boy counts aloud. The paper from the cement works says one number, the boy's count says another, and the difference is found weeks later when the shelf is short.

Questions Jharkhand hardware shop owners ask about waiting jobs, gang orders and contractor rates

A contractor takes half his cement now and the rest when the sand comes. How do I keep that?

Bill the half he takes today under his name. When the sand comes and he takes the rest, make a second bill under the same name. Both sit on his page, and the contractor sees his cement as one order taken in two parts, whatever the weeks between.

The gang boss pays for the gear on the first of the month. Can his bill wait on his page?

Yes. Bill each man's set of gear on the gang boss's page with the day he took it, so the sets are counted per man. On the first, when the mine pays its shift, read the page and note his payment.

A gang boss sends the sizes for all his men. How do I make one bill of them?

Make one bill with a line for each size and the number he wants, and send it to the gang boss's WhatsApp. At the gate before the shift, the men's gear is checked against the sizes on his phone.

Sand ghats, a plant town and the building trade

By 8 June 2026 only 14 of Jharkhand's 444 sand ghats had started legal sand extraction, and sand shortages had hurt construction work the year before. A hardware shop sees that as orders that are placed and not taken, and a contractor who cannot say when the job will start. A roof goes on after the walls, and the sand decides when the walls are up.

In Jamshedpur most people work in industrial units: Tata companies, iron and steel, automobile and cement. A hardware shop in such a town sells to households and to the many small contractors who keep a plant town's buildings, roofs and walls in repair. The roof, the wall and the gate all need something from the shop sooner or later.
