Jalandhar and Patiala, where the stationery trade meets the schools
A stationer in Punjab sells to schools, to colleges and to families, and the districts have their own habits.
- Jalandhar is where India's sports goods industry is based; most of the exports go to the UK, USA, Germany, France and Australia.
- Patiala district makes vanaspati ghee, power cables, bicycles and dairy products; large units such as HUL and Bunge are at Rajpura.
Why a Punjab stationer is busier with a visa file, an IELTS book and a wedding card than with a school list
A student's visa file: eight documents laminated, four photos and a folder
A student who is going abroad comes in with a bundle of documents. He wants eight of them photocopied, some laminated, four passport-size photos and a folder to hold it all. It takes an hour of your counter, and it is charged in your head by the page, by the lamination and by the set of photos. At the end he pays one sum and neither of you can say what it was made of.
IELTS practice books that sell in the weeks before each test date
The practice books for the English test sell in waves, in the weeks before the test dates, and new numbers of the series come out every year. A student asks for the latest one, a friend asks for the one before it, and a third wants the answer key separately. You know the shelf by heart until the wave comes and two titles are gone in a morning.
Wedding cards by the hundred, from a sample book and a printer in the next lane
A family orders three hundred wedding cards from the sample book. You give the names to a printer in the next lane, and the cards come back in a few days with a bill from him. The family chose design number 14 and, at the counter, remembers design number 41. The printer's bill and your own price are two sums that never sit on one page. And the printer's bill goes in the drawer.

From the laminated file to the card design that was really chosen
The four photos and the folder, counted off the shelf as the visa file leaves
A set of four photos is an item with one rate, and the folder is another. When the student takes the folder to hold his file, the count of folders falls by one, and the photos are counted as a set and not as four prints. At the week's end you know how many folders and how many photo sets the visa files used.
The answer key sold alone at one rate and with the book at another
Make the book an item, the key an item, and the book with its key a third item with a rate of its own. The student who wants only the key pays for only the key, and the student who wants both gets one line. The latest number and the one before it stay on separate lines, so each friend gets the right one. At night the report shows how many keys went alone and how many went with a book.
Each card design as a numbered item by the hundred, the printing charge on its own line
The family chose design 14 from the sample book, and by the time the cards are printed it remembers 41. Make each design an item with its number, sold by the hundred, and the printing an item with its charge. The bill names design 14 and the hundreds, so the number that was chosen is the number on the bill, and the printer's bill in the drawer is matched to it.
Questions a Punjab stationer asks
Of the student's eight documents, some are laminated and some only copied. How does the bill show which?
Keep the photocopy and the lamination as two separate items. A laminated document takes both lines and a document that is only copied takes the copy line, so the counts on the bill say how many of the eight were laminated.
The IELTS practice books sell in the weeks before each test date. How soon before a date should my order reach me?
Count back from the next test date. See how many days before the last date the practice book began to sell, and ask for the new lot so it is on your shelf by then.
The printer reprints a card for a spelling mistake. Where does the extra charge go on the bill?
On its own line, named as the reprint, beside the first printer's line. The family reads two printer lines, each with its reason, and you match each to the printer's bill.
Textbooks and bundled sets in Punjab's schools
From the 2026-27 session the Punjab School Education Board gives private-school students a 15 per cent textbook discount, and they can order directly through a mobile app or portal. A bookseller serving private schools can sort the school's list into the books a student may now get through the app and the books only the shop sells, and stock the second kind deeper.
Jalandhar parents said in March 2026 that schools send them to four or five authorised vendors, and books are sold only in bundled sets at select shops. A shop that sells a set can make the set an item with its own rate, and each book in it an item too.
