Billing for your stationery and book shop in Tamil Nadu
Pens, notebooks and school lists, billed fast when June fills the shop.

A compass fetched on the second trip, notebooks by the dozen and a June bought from last June
The compass she came back for
A mother reads out the list and goes home with the bag. At four she is back, because the compass was left out. Find her morning bill by her name and make the second bill under the same name, so the two sit together. The compass is billed on the day it was bought, and the morning's bill is left as it was.
The dozen for the tuition teacher, the single for the child
The same notebook goes by the dozen to a tuition teacher and one at a time to a child. Keep the dozen pack and the single notebook as two items, each with its own rate, and the teacher gets her dozen without any sum on a slip while the child's single stays at its own price.
The geometry-box make that the parents chose last June
Geometry boxes come in more than one make. Last June's report shows, day by day, which make the parents took first. In April you order that make for the same days, and the other make for a shorter shelf.

Mill towns and sweet towns whose children fill a Tamil Nadu stationery shop
Children come to a stationery shop from every kind of town. A few Tamil Nadu districts and the families in them.
- Coimbatore has many textile mills and more than 700 wet grinder makers, and the children of those working families need a new set of notebooks in June.
- Tirunelveli is known for its halwa, which visitors buy to take home, and is a venue for textile shopping, so a shop there sees students and visitors in the same street.
- About 5,000 families made Kanchipuram silk sarees in 2008, and the children of weaving homes in that town buy the small things for their school bags from the shop at the corner.
June's school lists, annual-day prize orders and a shop whose books now come from the school
The week the schools reopen
In the first week of June parents come with the school's list in hand, but the list is shorter now that the notebooks come from the school: a geometry box, a compass, two pens of one colour and a drawing book. Every item has to be found and added, one by one, while the line goes out of the door and children press their noses to the glass of the pen case.
Annual day, and one big order among the small ones
When a school plans its annual day, it orders a lot of pen sets, certificates and chart paper together. That one order sits among the pencils and erasers of the same morning, and the bill for it, with a dozen kinds of item, is the one that has to be right.
The school now supplies what you used to sell
Many of the books and the notebooks a child needs now come from the school. The counter's day is not what it was: parents come for the extras, the drawing book, the pen and the project chart, and a shop that stocks as it did before is left with the old lines on its shelf.

Tools for pens, notebooks, geometry boxes and the photocopy counter
Bills on your phone
A pen set sold as one item with its own rate, and the loose pens as another, so the prize-day order shows which the school's office took and which the shop still holds.
Many shops, one owner
A stall at the school gate in June, kept apart from the shop's counter under the one account, so you see what the crowd bought there.
Daily reports
The reopening week item by item, so the drawing books, charts and pens that filled the gap left by the free notebooks stand out.
Offers for regular customers
A better rate for the tuition teacher or the school office that buys in numbers every term.
Orders to suppliers
An order to the stationery wholesaler, made in April from last June's report, with its date, so the shelves are full by the first week.
Questions Tamil Nadu stationery and book shops ask about June and school lists
The school's annual-day order has a dozen kinds of item. Do they all go on one bill?
Yes. Each kind is its own line on one bill under the school's name, with its count and its rate. The total at the foot is the figure the school's clerk sees.
At the end of annual-day week, can I see what the small sales took apart from the school's big order?
Yes. Read the week's days. The school's order is one big line, and the pencils and erasers are the many small lines. The total of each item shows the small sales apart.
How will I know whether my notebook sales fell once the school began giving notebooks?
Open this June's reopening week beside last June's. The notebook lines are lower, and the pens and drawing books are higher, if the school's notebooks have taken their place. The daily report keeps every item for every day, so the gap is on the screen.
Geometry boxes come in two makes at different rates. Do I keep them as two items?
Yes. Put the make in the item's name, so the dearer box and the cheaper box each have their own count and rate. In June the report shows which make the families chose.
Free books from the state, and the sellers of Broadway
In May 2025 stationery sellers on Broadway in Chennai said schools now supply books and stationery, so their sales depend mainly on Corporation school students. A shop's busiest buyer is no longer a parent with a list but a school that tells the child what to buy.
In June 2025 Tamil Nadu began the free distribution of about 4.3 crore textbooks and 9.6 crore notebooks to government and aided school students for 2025-26. A Corporation school child who gets all of it free comes to a Broadway counter for one pen or a pencil box, not a list, while a private-school parent still shops by the whole list.
