What a Bihar parlour counter keeps on its phone

  • Bills on your phone

A bill with a facial, a haircut and a packet of alta on separate lines, each at its own rate, sent to the customer on WhatsApp.

  • UPI payments

A QR on the parlour counter for the girl who walks in for a threading with no change in her purse, so she pays from her phone before the next customer takes her chair.

  • Low stock warnings

A warning when sindoor, alta or bindi packets run low in the weeks before the women's festivals.

  • Daily reports

How many threadings, facials and haircuts were done on each day of the month, so the girls' shares are read from a list.

Girls paid by the service, a Chhath crowd for sindoor and creams that sit in summer

  1. Girls who are paid by the service, and a month's count in two heads

The girls who work for you are paid a share of what their own work brings: threading, facials, haircuts. At the month's end one says she did forty facials and you remember thirty. There is no list of who did what, only your memory against hers, and the argument is not about money so much as about being believed.

  2. Sindoor, alta and bindi by the piece in the week of Chhath

Before Chhath and the other women's festivals, the counter sells sindoor, alta, bindi, bangles and ribbons by the dozen and by the piece. Each costs a few rupees, and a woman buys six different things. They are added in the head and the notebook, and the total is a guess made quickly because the next woman is already holding out her hand.

  3. Creams and lotions that sell in the dry weeks and sit in the heat

The shelf of creams, lotions and face packs moves in the cold dry weeks and barely in the summer. You buy a full box in January and in June there are twelve left, with no way to tell which of them has been there longest or which sold well last year.

From the day's list of facials to the last packet of bindi

  • Every service on its own line, so the month's count is read, not remembered

Make threading, a facial and a haircut services with their own rates, and bill each one as a line. At the end of the month you open the report and read how many of each were done, and the share of every girl is worked out from a list instead of two memories.

  • Six small things for a woman at the counter, totalled as she picks them

Each of sindoor, alta, bindi, bangles and ribbon is an item with its own rate. You tap each as she picks it up, and the total is on the screen when she reaches the counter. The line behind her moves, and at night the count of every small thing is right.

  • Which cream sold in January and which sat through June

In January the lotions for dry skin are asked for at the counter, and in June the same shelf sits. Each is an item with a count. When the cold season is over, read the daily report: the lotion that sold through January gets a bigger lot next year, and the one that sat a small one.

Hands, buttons and wedding towns: where a Bihar parlour's customers live

A parlour and a cosmetic shop in Bihar serve women from towns and villages with their own trades, and each district has its own wedding season.

  • Madhubani painting, now made on paper and cloth for sale, has become a primary source of income for scores of families in the district.
  • In East Champaran, agriculture is the main income, and pearl button making and fishery are popular small industries.
  • Patna has long been a major farm hub and trading centre, where grain, sugarcane, sesame and Patna rice are the busiest exports.
  • Muzaffarpur farmers grow the GI-certified Shahi Litchi, and the first air export of it to the UK, in May 2021, was sourced from them.

What beauty parlour and cosmetic shop owners in Bihar ask

A girl says she did forty facials this month and I remember thirty. How do I check?

Open the report for the month. Each facial was billed as a line on its day, so the count of facials is on the screen and nobody has to remember.

Can sindoor and alta be sold by the piece and bindi by the packet?

Yes. Make each one an item with its own unit and its own rate. They are counted separately in your report.

Do I need a separate item for each service and each product?

Yes. Make threading, a facial and a haircut services with their own rates, and each cream or bindi a product with its own count. Both show in the same report.

Women of Bihar's Jeevika groups learning the beauty trade

In January 2026 a plan to train women of Bihar's JEEViKA programme as professional beauticians was discussed at an industry dialogue chaired by the chief secretary. A parlour owner in a town may soon have trained women working in the villages around her, and a parlour that already keeps a list of each service done in a month will find it easy to show a new girl what a month of work looks like.

A free 35-day beauty-parlour course began in December 2025 at the SBI rural self-employment institute in Madhepura for 32 Jeevika self-help group women, Prabhat Khabar reported. A parlour that counts its own services by the day knows what the trade is worth before a new one opens nearby, and what each girl's hands can bring in a month.
