The child with no textbook yet, pencils sold singly at the school bell and the lamination machine in the corner

  • A parent whose child has no textbook yet asks what to buy instead

When the government textbooks are late, parents come to the shop with the same question: what can the child use meanwhile? You know the notebooks, the workbooks and the guides. But you cannot say how long the wait will be, and the weeks run past the month she was told. She comes back, and the question and your answer are the same.

  • Pencils and erasers sold singly to children before the school bell

Before the bell rings, children crowd the front of the shop for a pencil, an eraser or a sharpener, one at a time, each for a coin or two. The helper takes the coins and hands the thing over. A child at the back already holds out his hand, and the helper cannot see from where he stands which box is nearly empty.

  • Lamination and spiral binding for project files

A child's project file needs lamination for its cover and spiral binding for its pages, and each is a small job at a small price. The machine is in the corner, the rate depends on the size, and the money from it goes into the cash box with nothing written. At night the corner has earned more than the pens.

Indore, a commercial capital with a school on every road

Schools stand in every district, and each of these has its own kind of family at the counter.

  • Indore is called a commercial capital, and soyabean is a kharif crop grown in most of the district. The children of a commercial city carry their school lists to the stationer on the way home.
  • Jabalpur is home to the Gun Carriage Factory and the headquarters of West Central Railway; Bhedaghat nearby is known for its marble rocks. The factory and the railway families of this district buy exercise books through the school year.
  • Zari Zardosi, embroidery made with lustrous metallic threads by generations of skilled artisans, is Bhopal's One District One Product. A family of zardosi artisans buys paper and drawing material for a child who copies the patterns his parents work.

The late-textbook parent's one bill, the pencil sold singly and lamination by the sheet

  • The late-textbook parent goes out with a bill that names each class

Make notebooks, workbooks and guides items with the class in the name. The list is tapped in as the parent reads it, and the bill reads class by class. The notebooks that go fastest in those weeks are the first ones to be reordered.

  • A box of pencils, counted out piece by piece at the school bell

Make the pencil, the eraser and the sharpener items sold by the piece. A bill takes seconds, and the evening report says how many of each went before the bell, so the next box is ordered to that number.

  • Lamination by the sheet and binding by the file are lines of their own

Make lamination an item sold by the sheet and binding an item sold by the file. A bill takes seconds, and at night the corner's earnings are a line of the day's report, apart from the pens and the paper.

  • Bills on your phone

A parent's list of notebooks and workbooks tapped in as it is read, with the class in each item's name.

  • GST bills

The school office's order with its GST worked out, made while the clerk is still at the counter.

  • Low stock warnings

Chart paper, files and pencils near the top of the list in the week before the exams, while a pack is still on the shelf.

  • Daily reports

The weeks of June, item by item, so the next June's cover rolls and labels are ordered from them.

What stationery and book shop owners in Madhya Pradesh ask

A parent whose child has no textbook asks for notebooks class by class. Can the bill name each class?

Yes. Put the class in the name of each item, and the bill lists them class by class.

A child's textbook arrives after his notebooks. What do I keep on the shelf for him until then?

Keep the workbooks and the practice sheets of his class, because those are what a child without a textbook is sent for. Watch their count, and order the textbook the day you hear the van is on the road.

Exercise books come ruled, plain and squared. Can I see in July how many of each went in June?

Yes. Make each ruling its own item. The daily report keeps every day, so open June and read each one.

A project chart is bigger than the lamination sheet. Can I bill it as two sheets?

Yes. Enter two sheets of lamination for the big chart and one for the small. The count and the report take the number, so the corner machine's line is a true number at the week's end, and you see when the lamination sheets need ordering.

More questions every shop asks

The textbooks that were late in July, and the app that tracks them

Government schools reopened on 1 April 2026, yet by 17 July over 8.15 lakh Class 1 to 8 students had no textbooks and 26.18 lakh had only a partial set. For a shop near a school, the busy weeks for notebooks and pens run into July, three months after the session began, so the June order cannot be the only order of the year.

Government school textbooks in Madhya Pradesh are printed by the Text Book Corporation and tracked on an app until they reach children at school, the state said in 2021. Your own shop has the same job on a smaller scale, to know what came in, what went out and what is left of each book.
