Billing for your dairy in Maharashtra
Every litre on the morning round and every day of the monthly milk account, on one phone.

Tools for the cycle, the can and the counter
Low stock warnings
A warning when the packet crate for the second building is running down, so you know before you climb its stairs with the last few.
Bills on your phone
A bill for the society function's curd and shrikhand in kilos, sent to the secretary on WhatsApp before the order leaves.
Daily reports
The loose litres from the can and the cooperative's packets on separate lines each day, so when the month's rate moves you see the day the loose line began to climb while the packet line stayed flat.
Orders to suppliers
An order to the cooperative or the farmer for tomorrow's cans, written with what is left in the shed in front of you.
Online orders
A house that wants one extra litre for a guest can ask from your own online shop the evening before, and you see it before the round.

Why the milk round in Maharashtra ends in a pocket notebook full of ticks
The bag on the door handle and the packet nobody saw
Before six you climb the stairs of a building with packets and a can of loose milk. Where the flat is still asleep, you hang a bag on the door handle and go on to the next floor. Later one flat says the second packet was never there, and another says it never asked for one. Nobody saw you leave it, and the only proof is a pencil mark made on the stairs.
Milk set aside in the afternoon for curd and paneer costs more since the rise
What is not sold by afternoon is set aside for curd or paneer. Since the price rise, each litre set aside, or lost, costs more than it did the month before. The curd and the paneer the afternoon makes are worth it only if you can say how many litres went into each.
The can's rate and the packet's rate, and only one of them moves with the month
A dairy in a Maharashtra town sells loose milk from the can and the cooperative's packets from the crate. The packet has the rate the cooperative printed, and the loose milk has the rate you set, and when the month turns only one of them moves. A customer holds out a note and wants the total at once. If the rate in your head is last month's, you are short on every litre of the can.

Where Maharashtra's milk and cooperatives are strongest
Milk in Maharashtra moves through cooperatives and unions, and a few districts matter more than the rest:
- Ahilyanagar is the largest district in Maharashtra, with 19 sugar factories, and sugar, milk and bank cooperatives flourish there.
- Pune district makes trucks, scooters, motorcycles and rickshaws and has 7 sugar factories, so many households there have a steady wage.
- In Nagpur, Sitabuldi is the main commercial market, and Kalamna is one of the largest wholesale markets for oranges and grains in Asia.
From the five o'clock can to the first of the month
The wedding week with no line, and the morning the page starts again
If a house stops milk for a wedding, those days have no line, and the house, reading its page on the first, sees the days it asked you to stop. The page picks up on the morning the milk starts again, and nothing in between has to be explained.
Monday's order for the cooperative, written from Sunday's numbers
On Sunday evening open the week and look for two signs: the mornings the can ran thin and the evenings the shelf sold out. A thin morning means the cooperative's can came short, and a sold-out evening means the shop wanted more. Order Monday's cans from both, not from a feeling.
A new house added and an old one closed
A family that moves into the lane gets a page on the first morning, with its usual litres. A house that shifts away has its page read down to the last day, so the dues are clear before the can is poured for the next customer.
Questions Maharashtra dairy owners ask
I leave the bag on the door handle and no one is there to confirm it. How do I show the house it was left?
Make the bill when you hang the bag and send it on WhatsApp. The house has the day and packet in writing, so a missed packet is checked.
Shrikhand week empties my curd by Wednesday. How do I know on Monday?
Open the curd count on Monday evening. It shows the tubs made and the tubs sold, and if what is left is less than last year's shrikhand days took, you set the afternoon milk aside for curd that night.
The whole building pays together through its society at the month end. How do I note that?
Write the part that belongs to each flat as a payment on its own page. Every flat then shows what it paid and what is left, even though the money came in one lump.
Milk rates in the weeks of August and September 2026
A dairy association decided to raise Maharashtra's cow and buffalo milk prices by Rs 2 per litre, and dairy products by up to 10%, from 11 August 2026. A dairy that sells curd and ghee had to write a new rate on its shelf that week.
In September 2026 the Pune district cooperative milk union raised farmer milk rates by Rs 1 a litre before Ganeshotsav, while Katraj Dairy kept packet-milk prices unchanged. A shop that buys from the union and sells loose milk, and a shop that sells packets, felt that month differently.
