NABARD Odisha Collaboration – Digital Empowerment of Odisha’s Handicraft Cottage Industries with Bharatrath Digital Platform

Odisha is home to a vibrant ecosystem of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Off Farm Producer Organizations (FPOs), and Producer Companies (PCs) engaged in handloom, handicrafts, bamboo work, and food processing. Despite their skill and heritage, most of these enterprises have historically struggled to scale beyond local markets due to limited digital adoption. To address this challenge, NABARD Odisha partnered with Bharatrath Digital Platform (BDP) to support the digital transformation of SHGs and Producer Companies. Through this collaboration, several grassroots institutions have launched their own e-commerce websites, enabled online sales, adopted digital billing systems, and upskilled artisans to operate using digital solutions for growth to the next level.
The Challenges Faced
Before adopting Bharatrath Digital Platform (BDP), SHGs and Producer Companies faced several common problems:
- Manual Processes → Inventory and billing were recorded on paper, making tracking difficult.
- Limited Market Reach → Sales were restricted to local exhibitions, haats, and offline shops.
- Lack of Online Presence → No website for a global audience, let alone any eCommerce capabilities to process orders beyond local markets.
- Payment & Logistics Barriers → No knowledge of modern digital payment solutions for sales to far-off customers. Also lacked resources to leverage modern logistics providers to cater to customers beyond local areas.
- Low Digital Literacy → SHG members required structured training to comfortably use digital tools.
Bharatrath’s Digital Solution
Bharatrath implemented its all-in-one business platform tailored for SHGs, FPOs, and artisans. The solution included:
- Custom E-Commerce Websites → Full-featured white-label online stores with product listings, cart, checkout, and order tracking. Now handicraft clusters can showcase their craft to a global audience.
- Digital Billing → Allowed accurate tracking of sales and inventory levels without manual intervention. Artisans can now focus on selling rather than accounting — at stores, exhibitions, wholesalers or B2B buyers.
- Inventory & Operations Management → From multi-warehouse operations to the entire supply chain (purchase of raw materials to sale of finished goods) – everything is managed digitally in real time including inventory, suppliers, wholesalers, customers, product and order management. Get real-time reports and analytics for management of the handicraft cluster, scaling operations efficiently and participating in government grant programs.
- Training & Ongoing Support → Just a digital solution is not enough. Team Bharatrath worked with each handicraft cluster to handhold and upskill members to manage the digital solutions with thorough training and daily feedback. Without on-ground handholding, such projects never become successful.
